Net profit margin is the percentage of revenue that remains as profit after all expenses have been deducted. It is calculated by dividing net income by total revenue and multiplying by 100. A higher net profit margin means your business keeps more of each dollar earned. It is one of the most important profitability indicators.

What Is Net Profit Margin?

Net profit margin expresses profitability as a percentage, making it easy to compare businesses of different sizes. The formula is: Net Profit Margin = (Net Income / Revenue) x 100. If your business earns $500,000 in revenue and $50,000 in net income, your net profit margin is 10%, meaning you keep 10 cents of every dollar earned.

For example, two businesses might both earn $1 million in revenue. Business A has a 15% net profit margin ($150,000 profit), while Business B has a 5% margin ($50,000 profit). Business A is clearly more efficient at converting revenue into profit.

Net profit margin is one of the most revealing metrics for understanding the health and efficiency of your business.

  • Efficiency measure: A rising margin means you are becoming more efficient at managing costs relative to revenue. A falling margin signals growing expenses or pricing pressure.

Typical net profit margins range from 5% to 10% for most small businesses, though software and consulting companies often achieve 15% to 25% or higher. Retail and food service businesses tend to operate on margins of 2% to 5%.
